Snowflakes reveal turbulence and wind patterns

Winter brings challenges to higher-altitude airports. Fallen snow burdens hangar roofs, prompting inspections and snow removal to prevent roof collapse onto aircraft. During winters, I spent a lot of time observing snowflakes in the wind from the hangar roof at my airfield. Snowflakes unveil turbulence and wind patterns that are not commonly known.

At an airfield on a plateau with a runway oriented from north to south, unexpected phenomena may occur. For example, when the wind from the west encounters the frontal edge of a forest, it splits into southern and northern flows over the area, varying each time. This local flow can affect the takeoff and landing of aircraft. Pilots must be familiar with these local phenomena and adjust their maneuvers to minimize risks.

During takeoff against the wind on the ground, a pilot may suddenly encounter tailwind during the initial climb or ascent over obstacles, leading to unexpected issues. Knowledge of local airflow allows the pilot to choose the right takeoff direction and adjust to minimize risks associated with wind conditions.

While some "airfields" are considered challenging, they are more of a challenge than a danger for recreational pilots. Sport pilots with advanced skills can safely handle aircraft even in more complex meteorological conditions and challenging surfaces. Their ability to sense turbulence and quickly respond to local phenomena enhances safety.

It is crucial to constantly monitor the environment, respond to local phenomena, and develop pilot skills. Aviation is about continuous learning and adapting to different conditions. Thanks to the Light Aircraft Association (LAA), we have the opportunity to modify our aircraft for sports activities with minimal bureaucracy. This allows us to enjoy the freedom of aviation and relish flying in nature.
